Baker Hughes Signs Gas Alliance With PDVSA, Opening a Path to Venezuela’s First LNG Exports

CARACAS — Baker Hughes signs a strategic alliance in Caracas on October 5 with PDVSA, Venezuelan contractor Lindsayca and U.S. firm Fulcrum LNG. It is meant to restore and expand Venezuela’s natural gas infrastructure, from upstream production and midstream transport to LNG commercialization.

The company also signed a memorandum of understanding with New Stratus Energy to develop future oil and gas prospects, and both agreements include provisions for U.S. sanctions compliance and OFAC authorization.

CEO Lorenzo Simonelli said a central goal is “the development of an integrated gas value chain,” a sign that U.S. energy firms are moving back into Venezuela as relations with Washington are renegotiated.

Venezuela Moves to Reform Infamous Anti-Hate Law as Washington Presses for Elections

CARACAS — Venezuela’s National Assembly has set up an 11-member commission to reform the 2017 “Law Against Hate,” which carries prison terms of up to 20 years and has been used against journalists, critics and political opponents.

The law has not been repealed and stays in force while the draft goes to the Supreme Court and then back to parliament. The opposition and rights groups say it “must be derogated, not reformed.” Foro Penal counts 927 people accused under it.

The move comes two weeks after acting President Delcy Rodríguez met Donald Trump at the U.N., where he said “you have to have elections at the end of the day,” and it will be read as a test of whether Caracas will change its laws as well as release prisoners.
