Dominican Republic Closes Embassy in Nicaragua, Asserts Democracy Concerns
MANAGUA, NICARAGUA — The Dominican Republic announced it is withdrawing its embassy from Nicaragua, with Foreign Minister Víctor Bisonó citing deteriorating democratic conditions and human rights under President Daniel Ortega.
The move follows months of escalating tension that began when Ortega declared Nicaragua “will not have elections again,” prompting the Dominican Republic to recall its ambassador in July and Nicaragua to close its own embassy in Santo Domingo in September.
With both nations now lacking diplomatic missions in each other’s capitals, the rupture between the two countries appears effectively complete.

Protester Ariel Limias Leyva Detained in Cuba, Transferred to State Security Prison After Demonstration
HAVANA, CUBA — Ariel Limias Leyva, a 52-year-old former pastor, was detained after climbing the steps of Havana’s Capitolio shirtless and holding a sign denouncing political discrimination and calling for an end to Cuba’s dictatorship.
Limias Leyva was then interrogated overnight before being transferred to Villa Marista, the State Security facility long used to hold government critics, with his wife saying he remains incommunicado.
The arrest underscores that Cuba’s tolerance for public dissent remains unchanged even as Washington and Havana exchange mixed signals over potential diplomatic engagement.

Machado Signals Willingness to Meet Delcy Rodríguez as Pressure Builds Over Venezuela’s Political Transition
CARACAS — Vente Venezuela has confirmed that opposition leader María Corina Machado remains willing to meet with Vice President Delcy Rodríguez to help accelerate Venezuela’s long-stalled democratic transition, provided any talks genuinely advance free elections rather than further delay them.
Spokesperson Claudia Macero specifically rejected proposals to postpone Venezuela’s next elections until 2030, while U.S. Senator Rick Scott helped bring the offer into public view.
The development comes as Machado continues living in hiding inside Venezuela, months after accepting the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize amid threats from the Maduro government.
