Asked in the Oval Office on Monday, whether the United States was reviewing its longstanding neutral position on Falklands sovereignty, Trump offered five words that avoided committing to anything specific: “I always review every position. That’s just one of many.”
The U.S. president gave no indication of whether any review would ultimately shift U.S. policy, which has maintained neutrality on the sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina since the two countries went to war over the islands in 1982.

Trump's remark did not emerge from any new engagement with Argentina’s claim, but from an entirely separate dispute: pressure on Britain over NATO defense spending.
According to reporting by the Daily Telegraph last week, the Pentagon has been drawing up measures intended to push NATO allies toward the alliance’s 5% of GDP defense-spending target, and the Falklands file was reportedly among the options being considered specifically to give Britain “special attention” — using a potential threat to the U.K.’s sovereignty claim as leverage to accelerate London’s defense spending increases.
