A Guatemala bus crash turned tragic in the district of Totonicapán in a remote area nicknamed the “Alaska Summit” in the western department of Solola near the Mexican border late Friday evening.
The passenger bus fell into a nearby ravine, killing 15 people and injuring 20 more, according to local authorities.
The bus was traveling along a section of the popular Inter-American Highway as part of a routine route stretching north from Guatemala City to San Marcos near the Mexico border when the bus plummeted down a 75-meter slope.
Although the exact cause of the crash remains unclear, preliminary accounts point to a mechanical failure with the vehicle or poor traffic conditions.
Large passenger bus accidents have claimed dozens of lives in Guatemala in recent years.
Last February, a bus traveling a similar route along the outskirts of Guatemala City at the Belize Bridge killed a total of 54 people after falling into a nearby ravine.
According to government agencies, a report done in October 2025 noted 446 public transportation accidents in Guatemala, killing a total of 111 passengers and wounding hundreds.
