American, 27, Missing in Spain, Found Dead by Spanish Authorities

On the 14th of July, an American man, Guilford Cole Henderson, 27, was reported missing when he failed to catch a return flight to his home in Amsterdam, Netherlands, following a brief trip to Spain.

Henderson, an avid packer with a passion for hiking explorations, according to friends, was living in Amsterdam while working as an engineer for the software company Dexter Energy.

A social media profile reveals Henderson’s extensive travel footprint, visiting locations throughout the world, including Breckenridge, Colorado; South Dakota’s Badlands National Park; a volunteering stint in Costa Rica; and a trip to Tour du Mont Blanc through Switzerland, Italy, and France.

Friends say Henderson had parked his car in the Spanish village of Torla and had planned to catch a ride back to his vehicle after spending some time camping while in the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park within the Spanish Pyrenees before his flight back home.

According to friends on Facebook, Henderson placed his cell phone on airplane mode in order to save battery, but when Henderson missed his flight, his friends became concerned and reported Henderson missing to Spanish police.

On Tuesday, the 12th of August, Spanish authorities said that rescuers had found the body of a 27-year-old American hiker a month after his disappearance. Police stated that the body had been found in the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park along the Spanish border with France.

Police also stated that it appeared Henderson had fallen about 650 feet down into “a difficult-to-access area on the north face of Monte Perdido, in the municipality of Bielsa.” Police detailed that the body “showed no signs compatible with life.”

Authorities then had the recovered body transported to a forensic medicine institute to “confirm his identity,” El Español reported. The parents of Cole Henderson were then notified by Spanish authorities that their son’s body had been discovered.
